Inheritance tax and gift tax share a common 10–50% progressive rate table. This calculator applies spousal and lump-sum deductions to inherited property, and relationship-based deductions to gifted property, to compute the tax due for each.
How inheritance tax is calculated
From the taxable estate (inherited property minus debts and funeral costs), you deduct the larger of the lump-sum deduction (500 million won) or basic deduction (200 million won) plus per-child personal deduction (50 million won each), and if there's a surviving spouse, an additional spousal deduction (500 million–3 billion won) is subtracted. The remaining tax base is taxed at the 10–50% progressive rate.
How gift tax is calculated
From the gifted property, a relationship-based deduction is subtracted — 600 million won for a spouse, 50 million won for an adult lineal descendant/ascendant (20 million for a minor), and 10 million won for other relatives — and the same progressive rate table used for inheritance tax is applied to the resulting tax base.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do inheritance tax and gift tax share the same rate table?
Both involve property transferring without payment, so for tax equity they share the same 10–50% progressive table — though the deductions and limits differ.
Do I choose between the lump-sum deduction and basic+personal deductions?
You can take whichever is larger, and the calculator automatically applies the more favorable option.
Why does the spousal deduction range from 500 million to 3 billion won?
It's based on the amount actually inherited by the spouse, guaranteed at a minimum of 500 million won, capped at the smaller of the statutory inheritance share or 3 billion won.
How often does the gift tax deduction reset?
Gifts from the same person (including a lineal ascendant's spouse) within a 10-year period are combined when applying the deduction limit.
Why is a generation-skipping gift subject to a surcharge?
When a grandparent gives directly to a grandchild, it skips a generation's worth of inheritance/gift tax, so a 30–40% surcharge is added to the calculated tax to prevent this.
What is a gift with an assumption of debt (burdened gift)?
A gift that transfers along with a liability (such as a jeonse deposit or loan) — the debt portion is treated as a transfer subject to capital gains tax, and the remaining net assets are subject to gift tax.
What's the filing deadline for inheritance tax?
Within 6 months of the last day of the month in which the death occurred (9 months if the decedent or heir resides abroad).
